Our Objective

The SIGNAL-RES project is designed to provide a groundbreaking solution for enhancing the participation of photovoltaic (PV) power plants in Cyprus within the Competitive Electricity Market (CEM).

Our mission is to enable both existing and future PV plants to dynamically dispatch energy using integrated Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), overcoming the current limitations in dispatch capability and opening up new opportunities for diversified energy services.

What We Aim to Achieve
  • Enable dynamic market participation for PV plants through a modular and intelligent Energy Management Platform tailored to Cyprus' grid specifications (TSOC/DSO).
  • Unlock new revenue streams for RES producers by optimizing market schedules and accessing balancing energy product markets.
  • Increase RES penetration across Cyprus by making PV plants more flexible, reliable, and compliant with upcoming market liberalization.
  • Deliver a TRL-7 level solution through real-world demonstrations and feasibility studies using live market and field data.
How It Works
We will develop a hybrid hardware-software system, enabling:
  • Remote retrieval and execution of market schedules via Balance Responsible Parties (BRPs)
  • Real-time control and automation through BESS integration
  • Machine-learning-powered forecasting for market-aware operations
  • Revenue optimization via cutting-edge multivariable algorithms developed by the University of Cyprus (KIOS CoE)
Demonstration & Validation
  • The system will be validated at a real PV plant under existing agreements with PV producers.Real-time control and automation through BESS integration.
  • A feasibility study will use live operational data and open-source market inputs to demonstrate economic and technical viability to investors and energy stakeholders.
Strategic Fit
  • The SIGNAL-RES project aligns with S3CY Focus Area 5.2.2, addressing the monitoring, intelligent control, and optimization of small PV systems. It pushes the boundaries of renewable energy integration by combining cutting-edge control technologies with market-ready forecasting and scheduling tools.

The SIGNAL-RES project is supported by the Research and Innovation Foundation (RIF) of Cyprus through the “RESTART 2016–2020” Programmes for Research, Technological Development and Innovation. Funding has been provided under the Programme “Commercial Proof of Concept – Energy,” aiming to promote innovative energy solutions with commercial potential. The project is implemented under the RIF Proposal Number COM-CONCEPT-ENERGY/0624/0002.
